Shotokan karate at which belt will we start taking different techniques ?
I am a yellow belt at shotokan karate ,and i was wondering based on anyones experiences ,when do we start taking moves other than the :front kick ,straight punch, roundhouse kick and reversed roundhouse kick (the one where you strike from your heel) ???
You can usually learn new techniques directly off of your kata without waiting for your instructor. In fact, pick his brain. When he comes and looks at your kata, go ahead and ask, "Hey what’s this funny thing I’m doing here? Where can I use that?" Take initiative in your own learning. Don’t buy the whole, "It’s a black belt move." That’s just another way of him saying, "I don’t know." If it’s in your yellow belt kata, then it’s a yellow belt move.
(Fair warning: Things you should not initiate in as you take the initiative in your own learning… Don’t annoy your sensai. If he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know. It doesn’t matter how he says it. Don’t put him in a position where he feels he has to make some BS up to save face. Don’t ask for new katas or ranks. And don’t start renting self instruction tapes unless they’re recommended.)
That varies depending on your instructor, and that reversed round house would be called a hook kick if I understand you, Most will stat adding moves at green or there abouts with more coming each advancement. Keep in mind you have to grasp the basics before you can move on.
You have to learn to walk before you can fly weed hopper. lol

As you advance, you learn new techniques. Each new kata you learn is rich with them, and new ways to use them. At yellow you have barely touched upon the basics of those techniques you are learning. You may have been taught the first 2 hian forms. By about a green belt you will know most basics. Upon reaching shodan the in depth learning begins in earnest.
