Can I teach myself to learn the nunchucks?

Im 15, I’m a blue belt and I do YOKU DO Karate. We dont use weapons but I’d really like to learn how. What I’d like to learn is the nunchucks. Can anyone give me any advice on how I can learn or teach myself? Is there a DVD I can buy or something?

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP.

Chances are you will probably ignore a sound advice from most people here. Listen to those who are telling you to get a certified kobudo instructor who can teach you a safe way to handle such dangerous weapon.

Here’s my personal sincere advice to you, Training online, videos, or books training without proper instruction from a qualified martial arts instructor are rarely a path one chooses if they want to succeed and progressed as a martial artist.

Video, Internet and books training alone cannot turn you into a good martial arts practitioner. Many can argue that Bruce Lee did it, but how many had forgotten that Bruce Lee had a solid martial arts background before he ventured to create Jeet Kune Do.

online, videos, or books training training cannot really correct or give you advices that you’re doing things right or even wrong. Training martial arts without proper instructions and supervision can also cause minor or even serious injury. online, videos, or books training can be best described like having a online, videos, or books romance. You don’t quite get the real thing ! You might think that you may have discovered the ultimate form of martial arts , but when it’s reality strikes, the facade and sloppiness of your "self-training" will show.

For long time practitioners of the martial arts , video training is just another "tool" in the "toolbox"

If not, get yourself a foam nunchucku and practice with it untill you can find someone who can teach you.

Good luck and be safe !

  1. Get a helmet and elbow pads

  2. You can try teaching yourself, but you might get frustrated and banged up a lot. Personally, I would find a school that teaches weapons.

  3. Yes you can but be very carefully you don’t want to put your eye out start off slow and then increase your speed and you know their illegal in some states I’ve seen major wound in the hospital ER please be carefull

    Know how to use them

  4. You could teach yourself some flashy demonstration tricks but you’d never be able to learn anything that you could really use.

As a rule, flail weapons are not the best as they’re very difficult to use and unpredictable. That’s why you’ve always heard of soldiers using things like swords, spears, polearms, but never things like mankigurasai, nunchaku, or the 9 section whip.

  5. "Twirling" the ‘chucks is not that hard. There are several books, videos, etc. that will teach this. Be sure to use "practice" ‘chucks at first or you will hurt yourself.

Now, if you want to learn how to FIGHT with the ‘chucks, I’d strongly advise finding an instructor. BTW, most schools/styles (with some exceptions, e.g. escrima) will not train in weapons until you’ve achieved some rank within their system. If you really want to learn weapons, I’d suggest changing systems to one that suits your desires.

  6. They are "nunchaku" (pronounced noon-cha-ka) not nunchucks, they are originally a Korean farming tool. Get proper instruction and learn the history, any idiot can play with them.

  9. I have never heard of YOKU Do karate, and a google search turned up nothing. I suspect you are a troll. If this question is for real than no please do not try to learn them yourselves. The way you see most used in tournaments and extreme MA are not the way they are really supposed to be used. Either find a school around you that trains them or an actual Okinawin style that trains them. If you try on your own accept that you are probably going to get very banged up at the very least.

  11. You can teach yourself ANYTHING if you really want to, but you need to realize that if you choose that path, you’re going to have to work three times as hard at it as someone who has a teacher. It’s very possible, but you’re going to have to put more time, energy, and dedication into it than others. People often underestimate the necessary dedication to perfect any art, let alone one you’re teaching yourself. If you’re on terms with that, then the answer is yes. If you plan on slacking off or half heartedly going through the motions, then the answer is no.
