  8. Hi there

There are no weapons as such except tanto dori (knife defenses). The best Karate instructors also teach Okinawan Kobudo jutsu (old weapons) to more advanced students but it is a separate style all on its own.

    Best wishes

  9. Most karate styles consider buki (weapons) to be a separate discipline called kubodo. An exception is the Okinawan style Isshin-Ryu which incorporates the bo (six foot staff), sai (small steel trident like device) and tuifa (handle for a rice grinder).

  11. Absolutely. Most systems of karate have some weapon training included as part of their curriculum. There are some who seperate the rank for karate and kobudo or kobujutsu and some who combine it. In Matsumura Seito Shorin-ryu, the weaopns and empty hand fighting are taught side by side. Weapons training includes bo, sai, tonfa, kama, nunchaku, eku, nunti bo, nitan bo and several others.

A better question to ask is "Does this school teach weapons?" some instructors do not teach weapons at all, even if the style contains weapons in it. It's just a matter of preference. If you study a real combat art, then weapon use is no different from empty hand use.

  13. Yes, based on my experiences. I began my Goju-Ryu training in 1968 and all the upper kyu and lower dan ranks had weapons training.

We all had to chose a weapon that we liked the best, and I chose the Sai. The Sai (small pitch fork) is the kobudo weapon which I've worked on for the longest time. Other 'karate' weapons were the Bo (long carrying pole); and the Nunchaku (rice flail).

The other styles of Karate I've studied (Shotokan and Uechi-Ryu,) included the katana (Japanese long sword) and the Okinawan kobudo weapons as part of their normal instruction.

Kung Fu is a style that has dozens and dozens of weapons included within their curricula.

The only pure striking style that I am aware that does not teach any weapons at all is Tae Kwon Do.
